‘Allo ‘Allo

The Lodge of Lights No 148 annual autumn social held at Warrington Masonic Hall is a well-established regular event which was planned by the joint ladies and social committee, led by Dave Tabron as social secretary. This year it was decided to change their normal dinner dance style format to ‘Allo ‘Allo, a tribute comedy show combined with a four course meal.

Gwilym Jones WM opened the evening by extending a warm welcome to everyone. He then handed over to the tribute group, who began by saying: “You will enjoy or you will be shot, I will say this only once!”

The evening comprised of a four course meal, with a comedy act between each of the courses performed by the tribute cast of ‘Allo ‘Allo. Grace was offered by the chaplain Ken Smith. The evening from then on was under the control of René (well almost), supported by Madam Edith, the French police, the French resistance movement and of course the dreaded Gestapo at Café René.

It was not long before the room was in an uproar with many comments and phrases or sayings changing or losing their meaning in translation (or should I say gaining far more humorous interpretations).

The evening was well supported by about 100 members and guests and the meal included pate, chicken in sauce with potatoes and vegetables, crème brûlée and a selection of cheese and biscuits with tea or coffee to follow.

The evening resulted in chaos and mayhem with a great deal of comedy, laughter and audience participation. General comments passed by many of the attendees included; a good night, most enjoyable, very funny, not stopped laughing, very professionally put together, much more enjoyable than I expected, good to see something different and good food, good company, good humour – enjoyed it very much.

The event was very successful and enjoyed by all. No one was shot! Even though we were only told once! A disco and dancing followed until late.

It is customary for the lodge to hold two raffles on this evening and two free tickets were included for everyone. The first or standard raffle was for any one of about 15 individual prizes of wine, spirits, sparkling wine, chocolates, animal pyjama case and garden plants. However, the main prize was a basket of drinks which contained several bottles of spirits including whisky, gin and sparkling wine and was won by Linda Boswell.

The evening raised in excess of £300 for charity and everyone enjoyed doing it! Dave closed the evening by thanking all for their kind support and wished everyone a safe journey home.
